Today, after more than 600,000 downloads of the public beta, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 has arrived. The download is ready to grab, and Adobe evangelist Julieanne Kost has posted 10 new videos to take you through feature and workflow improvements, big and small.
Per Product Manager Tom Hogarty, here’s a quick list of what we’ve changed since the last public beta:
Profile-based lens correction that addresses:
Geometric lens distortion(i.e., barrel or pincushion)
Chromatic aberration
Vignette effects
Manual geometric lens correction
Horizontal and vertical perspective correction
Improved Web templates for updated color and design options
Additional Print templates to utilize the new creative layout options
New develop presets for creative B&W and Color adjustments
Focal length filtering available in the metadata filter
Updated SDK with publish collection functionality and access to collection and keyword metadata
Improved interactive responsiveness
Ability to upgrade Lightroom 1, Lightroom 2 catalogs as well as Lightroom 3 beta or Lightroom 3 beta 2 catalogs
Images edited in Lightroom 3 beta or Lightroom 3 beta 2 will migrate to Lightroom 3.0 with little or no visual adjustments. Minor sharpening adjustments may appear.
Ability to migrate Photoshop Elements 6, 7 or 8 catalogs to Lightroom 3
Updated print resolution limits of 720ppi for local printing and 1200ppi for printing to a JPEG file.
Apple has a long relationship with Adobe. In fact, we met Adobe’s founders when they were in their proverbial garage. Apple was their first big customer, adopting their Postscript language for our new Laserwriter printer. Apple invested in Adobe and owned around 20% of the company for many years. The two companies worked closely together to pioneer desktop publishing and there were many good times. Since that golden era, the companies have grown apart. Apple went through its near death experience, and Adobe was drawn to the corporate market with their Acrobat products. Today the two companies still work together to serve their joint creative customers – Mac users buy around half of Adobe’s Creative Suite products – but beyond that there are few joint interests.
If you are using Lightroom on a 64 bit capable Mac you will be glad to know the latest update to Snow Leopard (10.6.2) fixes the bug that crippled the sending of multiple photos from Lightroom to Photoshop for editing. Previously, if you selected 3 or more photos in Lightroom and tried to send them to Photoshop for panorama stitching, HDR merging or opening as layers Photoshop would open but no photos would appear. The short term fix for this was to run Lightroom in 32 bit mode and all functionality for sending to Photoshop was restored. The downside being that you couldn’t run Lightroom in 64 bit mode.
So, install the 10.6.2 update from Apple, then right-click on the Lightroom icon in your Applications folder and uncheck the Open in 32 bit mode box, then launch Lightroom and give it a test drive. You should be back in business!

After you make changes in the character’s palette, you don’t need to re-enter the default values to return to the default status. Instead click on the little arrow in the top right corner of your character palette; a new window will open in which you can select at the bottom Reset Character.
Adobe has posted a revised FAQ (PDF) concerning application testing & compatibility with Snow Leopard. Notably:
Q. Do Adobe Creative Suite 3 products support Mac OS X Snow Leopard (v10.6)?
A. Adobe has worked closely with Apple throughout the Snow Leopard development and testing process. Adobe has conducted its own additional testing of our Adobe CS3 software on Mac OS X Snow Leopard, and is confident that our CS3 applications will function as expected with Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Adobe did uncover some non‐critical issues, which are documented for our customers to review*.

The initial release of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (v10.6) includes an earlier version of Adobe Flash Player than what is currently available from Adobe. Adobe recommends all users update to the latest version of Flash Player (10.0.32.18) which supports Snow Leopard and is available for download from Adobe.com.
Adobe has announced release candidates of Photoshop Camera Raw 5.5 and DNG Converter 5.5 for immediate download from its Adobe Labs site. The latest versions extends RAW support to the Nikon D300s, Nikon D3000, Olympus E-P1 and Panasonic DMC-FZ35. In addition, the ACR update also includes a correction for sensors with non-conventional color filter arrays. The ‘Release Candidate’ label indicates the update is tested, but not yet the finalized version.
