From the news today:

Apple today opened the first of a series of stores planned for Paris. The first, located near the famous Louvre art museum, coincided with the release of the Musee du Louvre iPhone app showcasing among other exhibits, Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

The Paris store, first reported in 2008, includes a 7,700-square foot two-story layout with diamond-shaped windows.

Apple will quickly open a series of stores in France, including a location in Montpellier in the southern portion of the country. By the summer of 2010, the Cupertino, Calif. company hopes to open its third location in France, near the Garnier opera house.

Ron Johnson, an Apple retail senior vice president, said France could witness the fastest growth of the company’s chain of stores.

Mac OS X v10.6: About Wake on Demand

2009
09.20

A short post about my experiences with the new Snow Leopard feature Wake on Demand. I found out that my 2007 MacBook Pro and Macbook were not visible when they were in Sleep Mode. According to Apple, Laptop Computers should also be visible in Finder, even if they are in Sleep Mode. So what is the deal here, after some research I found out that these MacBooks do not support the new feature, when they are connected to the local LAN wirelessly. They should be connected by ethernet, which isn’t very useful for Laptops with 802,11N onboard. So how can you check if your MacBook is able the use this new feature. Do the following:

  1. Open System Profiler (located in /Applications/Utilities).
  2. In the Network section, select AirPort.

If you see “Wake On Wireless: Supported”, your Mac supports Wake on Demand when connected to a wireless network and registered with the Sleep Proxy Server. If you do not see this entry, the Mac will only Wake on Demand when connected to your network with an Ethernet cable.

New “MacBook Pro lineup offers the best displays for photographers”

2009
07.05

Rob Galbraith wrote a piece about the new MacBook Pro lineup. The new line of display’s used for this lineup is said to be much better for photographers.

“What a difference six months makes. Back in January, we wrote about the suitability of the screens in several notebooks for editing photos in the field. At that time, Apple’s MacBook Pro 15 inch was pegged as being acceptable for this purpose, but barely: hue accuracy trailed the other portables we looked at, while the display’s glass front meant it was a battle to keep reflections at bay.

Fast forward to today and the overall MacBook Pro story is quite different: not only does the recently-revamped MacBook Pro 15 inch now ship with a superb colour-accurate display, but the new MacBook Pro 13 inch does too. Plus, the third member of Apple’s
MacBook Pro trio – the 17 inch – has both a great laptop display and the option of ordering it in a much-needed antiglare version.

Taken together, the current MacBook Pro lineup offers the best displays for photographers we’ve ever seen from Apple, with a potential solution for the remaining bugaboo – display glossiness – coming a bit later this year.” more here

15″ MacBook Pro Battery Tests: “Eight, freakin, hours”

2009
06.13

Via MacRumors….

AnandTech takes a look at the new MacBook Pros released at WWDC last week and focuses on the new non-removable battery design. Apple first introduced the non-removable battery into the 17″ Unibody MacBook Pro last fall with mixed reactions from the community. Apple’s reasoning behind making the battery custom and non-removable has been the ability to incorporate a larger battery that will provide even longer battery life. They’ve also argued that most laptop owners do not carry spare batteries.

Anandtech found the 15″ MacBook Pro got an additional 46% of battery capacity with no additional weight. Improvements were dramatic in their benchmark testing:

Apple Is Approaching a Defining Moment

2009
04.19

The NYT has an interesting article today regarding the coming three months at Apple. It states that Apple watchers and enthusiasts are positive about the new (possible) products, to be launched in the months to come (eg the new iPhone, iPhone OS 3.0, the Snow Leopard OS and a Apple Style NetBook). Here is an excerpt from the article:

“Come Wednesday, it will be Apple’s turn to discuss its results for the first three months of 2009. But among the crowd of Apple watchers, the discussion has been simmering for months, with the tone shifting from pessimism about recession-whacked sales to cautious optimism…………….”
