Canon Enable Manual Exposure in Video on EOS 5D Mark II

LONDON, UK, 27th May 2009:  Canon announced today it will release a firmware update for the EOS 5D Mark II allowing users to manually control exposure when shooting video.  The new firmware will be available for download from 2 June 2009 on Canon Europe’s support web site.
Following the launch of the EOS 5D Mark II in September 2008, Canon’s Research and Development team has listened closely to customer feedback to develop additions to the camera’s movie recording functionality.

Allowing EOS 5D Mark II owners to achieve even more stunning video results with the camera, the firmware update will include the following manual controls when shooting video:

  • Full aperture selection
  • ISO speed: Auto, 100 – 6400 and H1
  • Shutter speed: 1/30th – 1/4000th second

The EOS 5D Mark II integrates full HD movie capability into a high-end 21.1 Megapixel camera; opening a multitude of new possibilities for photojournalists and news photographers.   Since its launch the camera has proved its appeal to professionals working in diverse fields, from studio and wedding to nature and travel.  Now, following customer feedback, Canon has improved functionality for professional video users, further unleashing the potential of the EOS 5D Mark II for cinematographers and photographers alike.

Handi 5Dmk2

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Handi 5Dmk2 is a handy quick reference guide on the iPhone, covering most of the commonly used functionalities available on the Canon EOS 5D Mark II DSLR, including all Custom Functions and menu settings. It also has a useful Quick Help section for many frequently encountered photographic situations. Handi 5Dmk2 does not require network connectivity so you don’t have to worry about getting a network signal when you are out in remote locations.

No more carrying and flipping through that worn out user manual, or forgetting how to set up your 5D Mark II for a custom white balance

Canon updates firmware for 5D Mark II

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Canon has released updated firmware for the EOS 5D Mk II. Firmware v1.0.7 addresses the ‘black dot’ and vertical banding issues experienced by users of firmware 1.0.6. The latest version can be downloaded from Canon’s website. The company also asks users to update their DPP and Picture Style Editor software.

Canon announcement:

Important information for EOS 5D Mark II users.

We have learned that some users of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR camera (with firmware version 1.0.6)  have identified two types of image quality phenomena that appear under certain shooting conditions.

  1. “Black dot” phenomenon (the right side of point light sources becomes black)
  2. Vertical banding noise

Details of the phenomena and shooting conditions under which they are likely to occur (if the firmware is version 1.0.6) are as follows:

  1. “Black dot” phenomenon (the right side of point light sources becomes black)
When shooting night scenes, the right side of point light sources (such as lights from building windows) may become black. The phenomenon may become visible if the images are enlarged to 100% or above on a monitor or if extremely large prints of the images are made.
  2. Vertical banding noise
If the recording format is set to sRAW1, vertical banding noise may become visible depending on the camera settings, subject, and background.
    ▪ Vertical banding noise is not noticeable if the recording format is set to sRAW2.
    ▪ Vertical banding noise does not occur if the recording format is set to RAW or JPEG.
    ▪ Noise can be reduced if C.Fn II-3: Highlight tone priority is set to 0: Disable.

Firmware version 1.0.7. that addresses these phenomena is now available for downloading from the following Web site:

http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/firm-e/eos5dmk2/firmware.html

When updating to firmware version 1.0.7, please also update the Digital Photo Professional and Picture Style Editor software. For details, please read the Firmware Q&A section on the firmware download page.

Canon’s 5D Mark II: The World’s First Forbidden HD Video, Finally Official!!

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

During some free time from work David (photographer) and Florent (video editor forNihonCar.com and ManualGear.com), put together a STUNNING Canon 5D Mark II video demo. We noticed it was made without technical support, only two little hands to carry the camera, and a MacBook Pro for video editing.

One word, congrats!!!!!!

Our setting were pretty simple, we used a Canon 5D Mark II, with the following Canon lenses:

14mm f2.8L II
17-40mm f4L
50mm f1.4
90mm TS-E f2.8
135mm f2.0L

…along with your average MacBookPro 15″ (old gen). No color FX on the video.

Today Canon introduced the Canon 5D mark II

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

Wow, great specs from a kick-butt camera!! I Allready love this Cam!!

Back in August 2005 Canon ‘defined a new DSLR category’ (their words) with the EOS 5D. Unlike any previous ‘full frame’ sensor camera, the 5D was the first with a compact body (i.e. not having an integral vertical grip) and has since then proved to be very popular, perhaps because if you wanted a full frame DSLR to use with your Canon lenses and you didn’t want the chunky EOS-1D style body then the EOS 5D has been your only choice. Three years on and two competitors have turned up in the shape of the Nikon D700 and Sony DSLR-A900, and Canon clearly believes it’s time for a refresh.

So here is the 5D Mark II, which punches high in terms of both resolution and features, headlining: 21 megapixels, 1080p video, 3.0″ VGA LCD, Live view, higher capacity battery. In other words, a camera that aims to leapfrog both its direct rivals, either in terms of resolution (in the case of the D700) or features (in the case of the DSLR-A900). Full detail below.
